From Good to Great – Developing Expertise in the Classroom
Overview
This programme will focus on supporting teachers to become experts in the classroom. The programme will examine the latest evidence based research about effective learning and how this can be used to inform classroom practice. It will also look at how leaders in the classroom can influence the quality of teaching and learning in school.
Sessions:
The Art of Explanation In this session we will look at the most effective ways to convey the information we want our pupils to learn and how to can ensure access for all . We will examine the principles that lie behind great teaching and learning, and think about what these look like in practice.
The Science of Learning It has been said that learning is a change in long term memory. This session will explore the evidence around memory, and will help you to consider practical ways of using this evidence to maximise learning.
We will look at:
cognitive load theory and its implications for the classroom;
proven techniques to improve learning;
why low stakes quizzing and retrieval practice are so effective;
Planning for progress and making it stick During this session we will continue to explore evidence around cognitive science, focusing on how learning is transferred into long term memory.
We will look at:
planning longer units and not thinking lesson by lesson
implications for curriculum design
building schemas over time and spacing learning
Always improving The most effective teachers will constantly strive to hone their craft further and are unlikely to ever quite think of themselves as experts.
This session will investigate the evidence base for great teaching, including current findings from the latest research. We will look at the role of research in the classroom, unpacking the EEF toolkit and thinking about how we can ensure we are using evidence informed principles for teaching and learning.
