Prove-its and Vary-its resources for schools

‘Just because we taught it, doesn’t mean they learned it’

Prove-Its

We have produced a comprehensive bank of mini assessment questions and quizzes to enable pupils to ‘prove’ their learning through the application of knowledge and skills. Pupils engage with a range of ‘prove its’ to allow teachers to assess whether or not the learning has ‘stuck’. The bank is provided on USB sticks for ease of downloading and sharing within your school.

Maths Prove Its are made up of the following:

  • ‘Check its’ are used to make a quick assessment a few weeks after teaching a strand
  • ‘Think its’ include a range of problem solving and reasoning questions
  • ‘Test its’ are mini assessments used to assess learning at the end of a unit
  • ‘Beat its’ are quick fire sets of questions on arithmetic to be done within a time – focus on speed of recall

There are over 1000 ‘prove its’ covering every maths strand from year 1-year 6.

“We love this resource and our teachers use them all the time!”

Vary-Its – a new set of resources from PA Maths

The Vary-its have been designed to develop pupils’ ability to see connections and patterns within calculations, namely the mathematical structure of a calculation, and allows for learners to move away from simply being “good at maths” by, in some cases, robotically following a procedure – of which their understanding may have limited depth, and provides them with the opportunity to be mathematicians who can truly think mathematically, be that mentally or with informal written jottings.

Each of the Vary-its have been written using the principles of procedural variation, which means that as you move from calculation to calculation some things remain the same and some differ, allowing pupils to see the pinpointed mathematical idea that the set of calculations is aiming to expose. Teaching maths inclusive of procedural variation is central within the teaching for mastery approach.

  • Over 500 written examples of Vary-its, from reception-year 6
  • Blank templates for teachers to develop their own Vary-its
  • Access to a recording of a 90-minute training session for your teachers, given by our PA Maths Leader of Learning.  This will enable teachers to understand the principles of procedural and conceptual variation which lie behind the Vary its, which will deepen their understanding of how to use the resources with greatest effect to extend children’s mathematical thinking.
